Air travel: electrifying the skies

If you recall the Taylor Swift jet usage controversy, you'll understand why air travel stands out as one of the most environmentally damaging modes of transportation.

Airplanes emit 100 times more CO2 per hour than a shared bus or train ride. Here are some initiatives on the horizon that are looking to challenge these devastating statistics: 

The Hawaii Seaglider Initiative

Southwest Airlines recently announced its plans to join the Hawaii Seaglider Initiative, a program designed to combine the speed of an aircraft with the lower costs of boat travel. 

Recognizing the wastefulness of travel between the islands, Hawaii set out to establish seaglider use as nautical transport vessels. These vessels commence their journey by floating on a hull, then seamlessly transition to gliding on underwater hydrofoils, before finally taking flight above the water's surface while staying in ground effect. They are all-electric and are expected to be in use within the coming years. 

Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Aircraft

With Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Aircraft (eVTOL), our ‘Meet the Robinsons’ dreams can finally come true! 

With prototypes in development and billions invested in their conceptualization and manufacture, eVTOLs are poised to revolutionize transportation. 

Powered by electric propulsion and equipped with advanced lithium-ion batteries, these futuristic aircraft offer quiet, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective alternatives for short-distance flights.

Solar-powered aircraft

With aircraft flying so high in the sky, what better opportunity than to harness the sun’s rays for power? Companies like Airbus are taking the initiative to develop efficient and sustainable solar-powered aircraft. The company currently has Zephyr, a non-passenger vehicle that can fly for months at a time. 

While solar powered passenger planes are not a reality now, zero emissions planes are in the works as companies like United Airlines are promising electrification as early as 2026. 

Sea travel: The waves of change

Sea travel, predominantly used for international shipping, contributed to 3% of the world’s carbon emissions in 2022. 


Hydrofoils represent a promising solution for sea travel. These underwater wings enable boats to lift out of the water at high speeds, reducing drag and increasing efficiency. By minimizing resistance, hydrofoils allow vessels to travel with less energy consumption, ultimately reducing their carbon emissions

Autonomous ships

By leveraging advanced technology such as artificial intelligence and remote operation systems, autonomous ships offer the potential to optimize routes, reduce fuel consumption, and minimize environmental impact. 

Autonomous ships are already in use for smaller ventures, with plans to bring them to larger operations in 2028

Solar-powered boats

The growing trend of solar-powered electric boats has gained momentum due to their ability to operate without relying on traditional fossil fuels, thereby significantly reducing their carbon footprint. 

Unfortunately, opponents to solar-powered boats argue that they are too expensive and slow to be adopted by larger ships at the moment. Here’s to hoping future technology developments help decrease the barriers to making solar-powered boats a reality!

Land travel: Revolutionizing mobility on roads and rails 

Land travel is undergoing a transformation as innovative technologies and sustainable practices revolutionize mobility on roads and rails. 

Maglev Trains

Maglev trains represent a cutting-edge solution for high-speed rail travel. Using magnetic levitation (hence, maglev) technology, these trains glide above the tracks, eliminating friction and allowing for incredibly fast and smooth journeys. 

By minimizing resistance and energy consumption, maglev trains offer a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional rail systems. If you’re looking to ride a maglev train, you’ll need to venture to Asia as China, Japan, and Korea are currently the only countries leveraging this technology at the moment.

Hydrogen vehicles

Hydrogen vehicles are another promising innovation in land travel. Powered by fuel cells that convert hydrogen into electricity, these vehicles produce zero emissions at the point of use, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional gasoline-powered cars. 

Hydrogen vehicles offer the convenience and range of conventional vehicles while emitting only water vapor and heat as byproducts. Companies like New Day Hydrogen are making hydrogen vehicles more accessible to the public.
