This Week, Meet Luis L.

Luis’ literal job title is FLUID NINJA. He was one of the first handful of employees to start at Fluid Truck five years ago. He’s worn all the hats, and now trains Fluid Truck Lieutenants (our boots-on-the-ground vehicle techs located all around the country). Luis is a wealth of knowledge and skills - If anybody has a broken phone or needs a random item fabricated, Luis is the guy to do it. Keep reading to learn more about Luis!

What is your position at Fluid Truck?

Fluid Ninja - think of it as a Master Lieutenant. I train all the other LTs to do everything the way I did it for the first four years of the company. That's why they named me the Fluid Ninja. Master Lieutenant! When I first started with Jimmy, he used to send me on missions, then we built up the customer base, and every time something was happening or something went wrong, I'd show up because everything was close by. The customers started saying, "you just appear whenever there's a problem! You appear then disappear!” Jimmy said I was like a ninja, and the name stuck.

What do you do when you’re not working?

Well, I have a lot of different hobbies. Like I collect rare coins, pops, halloween decorations and halloween stuff. I have a store where I sell collectible items called Out the Box. I also forge knives, like blacksmithing with an anvil and a hammer. I draw, I paint, and I've got a Cricut machine that I like to use. Every time Jimmy breaks his blackberry I'll fix the screen. I have a lot of side hustles. I feel like if I'm sleeping, I'm wasting time. I fly drones too. I have way too many hobbies. I didn't need to start blacksmithing, but yeah…. Here we are!

Do you support any sports teams?

Uhh... I don't know, I think everyone will hate me for my opinion, but I think sports are overrated.... they get paid way too much to be playing a game. They could pay teachers more... I don't really believe in paying a sports player millions of dollars to go out there and play a game. But I liked to play street tackle football when I was a kid! I like playing, I just don't think you need to get paid that much.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

Jimmy told me, “own it! Make it yours! You're working for yourself.” The ownership that Jimmy gives us, and the opportunity he gave us to be somebody in the world. That's my favorite thing about it. Every other job I've had, I felt like I was working for someone else and they'd get all of the benefits. I felt interchangeable. When I ask for more money they're like, “get out of here.” They didn't appreciate me the way that Jimmy does. The company appreciates us as people, not just another employee. Another thing I really like is that I was here in the beginning. I love that - being The Ninja. I never had another job that feels this way. It's my company too. I'd get a face tattoo of a little Fluid Logo if Liz let me.

Do you have any secret talents?

Drawing! Oh yeah, I'm a Harley Davidson technician too. I have like 11 diplomas for Harley Davidsons. I can fix anything, from the first model all the way to the 2010s.

What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Jimmy brought me up from somewhere else - I had a totally different mentality. I've always been a hard worker - I've been working since I was a kid. By the age of 12 I could install hardwood flooring. But Jimmy trained me to be a leader. At one point I was running 5 lieutenants, and taking care of the whole market. Now, I'm doing training videos - Jimmy has evolved me throughout the whole company. I've had all the hats. So the best advice would be... "Own it!" Take ownership of what you're doing. I think that's the best advice he gave me - it changes the way you think. "Here's the credit card - use it when you need it but own it like it's yours" Like, shop around for the right tires and the right price. When he told me to own the business like it's mine, that's what we did. We owned it and brought it up. Like it's our money and our sweat and tears.

If you were going to have a TED Talk, what would it be called?

“Don’t take No for an Answer!”

If you could have a Fluid Truck full of one thing, what would it be?

Plantains. I love plantains. Mash them, boil them, fry them, tostones... so many things you can do with the plantain. Soup! Everything. Love them.

What would you tell someone who wants to work for Fluid Truck?

I would tell them that this is a place where you can change your whole life. It's an opportunity of a lifetime. You can be somebody with Fluid - Fluid will give you the runway to take off.
